Events that led to the renaming of the Greer High School Stadium.

According to Karuiam Booker, Council members had in mind eventually doing something to honor Lonnie McGee after his untimely death. But it was then in February, Black History Month, that Booker pushed for immediate action while the iron was hot and before anyone had time to change their minds later.

In time, Booker said, councilmen struck a consensus of renaming Greer High School field after McGee. At a later date, he said, the council can schedule a ceremony, perhaps during the first or second home game, and in August, the council can present the official signage with the new name of the stadium at a football pep rally.
