Jones Gap State Park Opened March 1

Jones Gap State Park May Never Be the Same Since Hurricane Helene

Nature lovers will want to see the difference. Forestry experts from the regions have converged on the park to restore what they could and embellish the rest.

Jones Gap State Park 'strikingly different' due to Helene. What to know as it reopens

After a four-month closure following Tropical Storm Helene, Jones Gap State Park reopened on March 1.

While we are happy to bring the park back online, please be advised that the park WILL BE different. Please read carefully what to expect before visiting,” South Carolina State Parks said in an Instagram post.

Day-use campsites and parking reservations at the park have already been sold out on the first day.

Here's what to expect when visiting the park this spring.

What damage was done to the park by Helene?

S.C. State Parks described the damage done to Jones Gap as "extensive." The park's areas were also described as "strikingly different." Helene's heavy rains and powerful winds uprooted countless trees throughout the park, resulting in destructive landslides that shifted certain landscapes that visitors may be familiar with.

How many trails are closed at the park?

Due to fallen trees and damage, many of the park's 60 miles of hiking trails remain closed. Jones Gap Trail is open to Jones Gap Falls. Rainbow Falls Trail is also open. All other trails are closed.

What campsites are currently open?

Campsites 8-11 are currently open for reservations, which can be made online.

What to know about  pedestrian access

The Visitor Center, which includes the park office and retail area, restrooms, and historic fish hatchery, is open and accessible by foot traffic. The parking lot can be used to access the pedestrian bridge in the area. Helene destroyed the vehicle bridge to the park's Visitor Center, which will be replaced later this year. The storm also caused the vehicle bridge to be displaced. Therefore, there are currently no accommodations for accessing the ranger station.

Parking to sell out frequently during spring, early summer

Due to limited availability, park visitors are encouraged to reserve parking before driving to Jones Gap. Parking is anticipated to sell out frequently on weekends during the spring and early summer. If parking is sold out during your visit, spots will become available at 1 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis, as is always the case during the week and weekends. The public is now invited to visit the park and experience the difference.
